A piece of London History

This cast iron Coat of Arms from the City Corporation was one of many sections being part of the First Floor Balcony Balustrade of the “Coal Exchange” which was built opposite Billingsgate on the corner of St Mary at Hill 1889.

It was one of the first buildings in London to use Re enforced steel construction.

The Rope design representing the Ropes used in Coal Mine shaft lifts.

It had superb frescos and a mosaic floor of 4,000 pieces of wood representing a compass.

The Coat of Arms was rescued by Edward Holmes of the City Engineers Department when the building was demolished in the early 1960s for road widening.
