Architectural Joinery salvaged from Deanery Garden, Sonning – attributed to Edwin Lutyens (1899–1901)

Early Lutyens houses like this are **very important to Arts & Crafts architecture**, and original interior joinery rarely enters the market.

An important section of Arts and Crafts oak wall panelling, almost certainly from the principal hall at Deanery Garden, the panel and joinery configuration exactly matching published and archival interior photographs of the house, including RIBA photographic records of 1981.

Attribution Based on:

- Close correspondence with archival photography
- Consistency in materials, construction, and proportions
- Documented restoration period during which removal likely occurred
- Installed at Deanery Garden, Sonning (c.1899–1901)
- Documented in situ in RIBA photographic archive (1981)
- House acquired by Stanley J. Seeger circa 1988
- Joinery elements removed during subsequent restoration or alteration works (late 1980s–early 1990s)
- Retained by craftsman Colin Mantripp, who worked at the property during this period

We was offered a selection of salvaged joinery by an individual by the name of Colin Mantripp.

He acquired the joinery from the Stanley J. Seeger owner of the Deanery in the 1989.

The narrative is Colin was a regular visitor and friend of Stanley J, Seeger where he carried out restoration work on behalf of Stanley who purchased the house in 1988.

Seeger was famous for owning the largest collection of Picasso’s, 88 at the time but decided to burn one of these, when asked why he had burned a Picasso original worth millions, he responded by saying it was one of the worst Picasso had ever painted and should not be inflicted on anyone ever again. Bear this in mind when you consider the removal of the Lutyens joinery from a Grade I listed property.

Stanley was believed to have been a huge fan of Lutyens but was unhappy with one part of the house.  It is stated that Seeger didn’t like this and pulled it down but stored the joinery in a garage. Later in the early 1990’s, Seeger wanted the joinery removed as he had purchased a car, Colin was instructed to action this so moved it to a barn where it has sat for over 40 years. This has now been purchased from Colin recently.

The collection is made up of two corbeled arch doorways  (black and white RIBA photo, gives full provenance), one arched doorway, one leaded french split doorway/window, one large arch (art nouveau in top left corner go black and white photo, lots missing but gives full provenance), eighteen metres of pegged oak wall panelling (black and white photo, gives full provenance) and two bookcase cabinets that need restoration. There is also lots of bits and pieces that would aid the restoration if needed.

The joinery offered shows all the classic 'signature' elements and construction methods synonymous with Lutyens and the classic Arts & Crafts heritage and integrity:

- quarter-sawn oak
- visible pegged joints
- chamfered framing

As cabinet makers and antique restorers, we can offer a full refurbishment service along with the capacity to create matching joinery to complete any future project entertaning this rare find.
