Demolition Alert: Quantity of teak windows and gilt crémone bolts
Trade interest is sought for some teak framed windows and with gilt brass bolts which are scheduled to be removed from a seven storey 1906 London building from mid-2026 to 2027. It is unlikely that the windows will be removed intact, but it might be possible to reclaim a number of central casements and their frames intact. Many of the windows consist of an identical inner and outer frame, each with a modern tempered safety glass double glazed twin casement. The total number of window openings is 120, so in theory the reclamation could produce 240 double glazed casements, or 120 quadruple glazed casements.
The brass/bronze fittings of many of the casement windows include a (presumed) gilt crémone bolt (similar to espagnolettes) and hinges. One of the bolts was removed which showed that the back was stamped 'H E L Fontaine, Rue de Fauborg St Honoré, Paris'. Maison Fontaine, formerly located on rue de Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris, is one of France’s oldest makers of decorative brass window furniture and architectural hardware, with roots dating back to 1740. The company was founded by M. Lavollée and later taken over by Francis and Joseph Fontaine in 1842, when it adopted the Fontaine name. Known for its artisanal brass and bronze work, Maison Fontaine decorated many notable Parisian buildings and palaces, and their founders were key figures in establishing the firm’s reputation for quality window and door fittings.
