A pair of uniquely designed blacksmith
Estate-entrance driveway gates which was created by one of the greatest iron mongers of this country back In the Victorian era By William Letheren. Letheren was a renowned and artistic metal work, hand forged craftsmanship who worked in the Cotswold School many of his designs can be seen to this day in Churches and private domestic dwelling’s throughout the Cotswold and Cheltenham area, gates and railings etc.
Another of his unique metal designs can be seen in the famous all saints church in Cheltenham which was designed by
John Middleton Who designed the interior in the Arts and Crafts movement. There are fine stained glass windows designed by burne-jones and made by Morris&Co. Most splendid of all is the elaborate foliated and guilded iron work canopy over the font. Made and designed by William Letheren.
William Letheren won competitions held by the society of arts in both 1865 and 1866. the Victorian and Albert museum acquired the winning ornate panel from the 1866 competition, the museum also holds a wrought iron bracket that won a prize in 1865.Letherens work is associated with the Cotswold school which was a late 19th and early 20th century movement known for its traditional hand craft approach to decorative arts.
These gates are stamped by a hammered punch which can be clearly seen on the left side of the gate which reveals the name Letheren. The provenance of these gates are from Chorley hall, which is a big historic estate that can be found in rural north of Shropshire. These are a pair of heavy duty quality gates. Letheren was considered as the greatest ornate ironworker of the Victorian era.
