Many of the leading predictions for interiors in the year ahead claim the focus is now on eco design trends. So will sustainability really become a key consideration in the choices we all make in 2020? I have chosen just a few of my own favourite designer quotes below.
Catherine Romano, Wall Street Journal, interviewed one hundred decor pros and they see a move away from disposable interiors. It is time for a change to instead discover unique pieces made to last. I particularly loved the comment by Achille Salvagni, 'No one wants to inherit that IKEA coffee table.'
Architectural Digest 2020 design trends include vintage maximalism which brings colour, warmth, eclectic touches and antiques into the mix. They quote interior designer, Tali Roth, ' We are all craving our own unique stamp on our spaces. We are looking for unknown and unnamed pieces to make our personal spaces stand out from the crowd.' My other highlights in their predictions are free-standing bath tubs, statement door knobs and pulls.
Elise Taylor, reporting for Vogue in 8 Interior Design Predictions For 2020 (And What's On Its Way Out) also confirms that top trendsetters are using reclaimed materials. She quotes top designer Timothy Corrigan, 'We’ll see the continued resurgence in the use of antiques; even younger people are using them as an alternative to mass produced catalogue offerings, in a desire to create rooms with more character and individuality.' And Elise calls the trend, 'eco-conscious chic'.
However for designers such as Maria Speake, salvage and reclaimed materials have always featured in their design projects. Maria was named as the House and Garden interior designer of 2019. Her designs also feature inventive ideas for reusing old pieces. Maria co founded London based architectural salvage showroom, Retrouvius with partner Adam Hills. In a recent Financial Times article Adam describes salvage as, ' the antidote to the age of bling.' Retrouvius is a member of the Salvo Code and you can find them in the Salvo directory of architectural salvage dealers.
