Julian Chambers of Elham Antiques, who is famed for his shepherd's huts and has a penchant for the big and exotic, is planning to bring some stiff leaf Nashian columns, big floriated corbels, a large three-quarter engaged column breakfront chimneypiece, and what looks like an old carved ship's figurehead.
Mr. Chambers writes that the three amazing carved pine columns are in the style of John Nash, the designer of Brighton Pavilion, Buckingham Palace and Carlton House. The columns are definitely of the Regency Period and there are similar ones in the Brighton Pavilion. There are also two large and very ornate carved wooden brackets which are very like ones in the Nash Gallery at Buckingham Palace. There is also a wonderful carved caryatid who I think may be Hercules and probably came off a large chimney piece. I bought these pieces from a property developer friend who bought a panelled room to fit a church conversion he is doing and these came with it, he was vague about where they came from but said he acquired them from an elderly gent who had got them many years ago from a very important house in London. They were all very dirty and had obviously been stored for a very long time. Could they be part of a lost Nash interior? Also with them came a huge carved wooden fire surround which looks Georgian in style but is of 20th century construction and again was covered in dust and cobwebs from years in storage.
Does anybody out there in Salvo land has any idea as to the possible history of these items, Julian asked and said, "If I still have them then we will bring them to the Salvo Fair."
We look forward to seeing them!
