On 23 August 1962 John Lennon married Cynthia at the Mount Pleasant register office in Liverpool. This was followed by their wedding reception at Reece's, Parker Street, a 1930s building made from Portland Stone.
Epstein paid for the reception and Reece's, Liverpool served a set menu of soup, chicken and trifle. It is supposed to be a bad omen but the guests toasted the couple with water, as it was not a licensed premises. Reece's was also where John's parents Alf and Julia had celebrated their wedding in 1938.
In October 2014, the Liverpool Echo reported that Reece's ballroom where John Lennon and his first wife Cynthia had held their wedding celebration was to be redeveloped. Reece's Ballroom, Liverpool held regular rhythm and blues nights in the 1960s and remained a popular venue until the 1980s when it closed. It is one of the city's landmark Beatles locations. But by 2014 the lower floors were already in retail use and the upper floors were then to be redeveloped into luxury city centre apartments.
On his wedding night John had still played a show with The Beatles at the Riverpark Ballroom in Chester. This building also closed in 1963 and was later demolished. The support act on this occasion was The Remo Four and the drummer was Harry Prytherch.
He commented in 2011, "We found out when we came off stage that John had got married that day. Brian Epstein was best man and wanted to keep the wedding hush hush as he felt it would mar the Beatles' image with the fans when they found out. Paul and George were also at the wedding as witnesses. John's Aunt Mimi had boycotted the wedding because she strongly disapproved. Brian treated the wedding party to a wedding breakfast at Reece's Cafeteria in Liverpool. It was also revealed later that Cynthia was pregnant.'
The couple divorced six years later when Lennon left Cynthia for Yoko Ono.
