The book, Cabin Porn, is a real inspiration for your own quiet space. The name cabin immediately conjures up thoughts of a simpler life connecting with nature and this is exactly what author, Zach Klein, felt he needed. He had created an online community as co-founder of the successful video sharing site, Vimeo, but this vision led him to the new challenge of creating a real life woodland one.
The Beaver Brook community is a group of cabins in the woods of upstate New York where people live or visit for a short break and can learn the craft of rustic timber framing. Zach enjoys the simple life when visiting his own cabin but he still has the luxury of a wood fired hot tub.
The idea of escaping began with a website and blog where images of worldwide cabins are uploaded and Zach documented his own cabin building experience. This then developed into a book to encourage others to enjoy the challenge of building their own quiet space. He believes in building with ecological sensitivity and noticeably the first structure on Beaver Brook was built from a salvaged timber frame barn.
Another cabin showcased in the book was Sam Caldwell's sugar cabin built in Bolton Landing to make maple syrup. Sam used scrap corrugated metal roofing and a door was salvaged from an old boat house.
There are many examples on the blog of cabins built with reclaimed materials, such as the magical cabin made up of reclaimed windows.
For people feeling those stressed or depressed January blues, this book may be just what is needed - so take a deep breath and enjoy every page.
