Among the 732 lots, Gaze of Diss has an old revolving summerhouse by J T Hobson, Bedford, estimated at £3,500 - £5,250 at Saturday's sale of architectural and garden salvage. James Thomas Hobson J.P., who started business in Bedford around 1844, rose to become mayor in 1876 and 1880, and his firm of J T Hobson & Co continued until the 1960s, as timber merchants and manufacturers of wooden buildings.

An advert from 1939 (see photo from Grace's Guide) shows the Hobson summerhouse, open fronted, but with identical folding table and side windows. The ad reads:

Pavilion for … Garden Lovers, Sun Worshippers, Tennis Players … or fresh air enthusiasts - for the 'Sunrest' pavilion is just grand for sleeping out on warm summer nights. It has opening windows and a table which folds neatly back on to the wall when not required. It is a wonderful asset to your garden and costs only £11 complete. Carriage paid. Write or phone for coloured folder which gives all details. Sectional building or Stabling catalogue sent free on request. J. T. Hobson & Co. St Mary's, Bedford. Telephone Bedford 2567.

The normal plethora of garden and architectural lots are on offer in this sale of which two notable are a Rothschild's estate cupboard and an Edwardian oak revolving door from the Crown & Anchor Ipswich estimated at £300.
