Nostalgia has been trading for 37 years and is home to the largest collection of old fireplaces in the UK. The business was started by Elizabeth and David Durrant and has recently moved to larger premises. The move coincides with the passing over of the business to their son, Nick Durrant. After trading for many years from Hollands Mill on Shaw Heath in Stockport, Cheshire, the family have embraced the challenging and exciting relocation. At the new premises Bridge House in Bredbury, with 18,000sqft of showrooms and offices, they are better able to display and restore their stock of nearly 3000 genuine antique fireplaces, sourced from all corners of the country and the continent.
Nick talks about his passion for antiques and growing up with Nostalgia: "Being a family business, my sister and I spent lots of time in the shop on Saturdays and school holidays. I loved climbing in amongst the reclaimed fireplaces and building dens. I suppose that's when I caught the antique bug and my future career was decided. The handing over of the business has been gradual and this has helped ease me into the role. David is looking forward to spending more time restoring antiques. I am sure he will still have a little input in what is bought and sold. With new larger premises and a growing customer base I am hoping to expand the business further."
SalvoNEWS asked Nick what his current favourite piece of stock is. "It would have to be a very large and ornate pollard oak chimneypiece that we bought and restored recently. It really is a unique item. I particularly like and appreciate the craftsmanship involved in carving the bow fronted cupboard doors and the convex glass in the side doors. We bought it from a member of a well known UK reggae band popular in the 1980s and 90s."
Nostalgia's new showrooms and warehouse are now at Bridge House, Ashton Road, Bredbury. Nick said, "The business will really benefit from excellent motorway links. It is close to Stockport train station which is on the London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly line, but Nostalgia remains in Stockport where we have created a worldwide reputation for the sourcing and supplying of fine antique fireplaces. The new showrooms are now open and a warm welcome is guaranteed to old customers and the new."
