Fife, UK
A landmark building in Kirkcaldy is due to be demolished before the end of the year. The old lino factory in Victoria Street was built in the 1880s, has been empty since 1985, and has cost £100,000 a year to maintain.
Despite opposition from the Kirkcaldy Civic Society and Fife Historic Buildings Trust, permission was granted to demolish the building last year.
The smell of linseed oil used to make linoleum in Kirkcaldy is commemorated in a poem by M. C. Smith: For I ken mysel' by the queer-like smell,
That the next stop's Kirkcaddy.
The lines can be seen on lino in the waiting room of the south platform of Kirkcaldy Railway Station, which was donated by Forbo Nairn.
