Cornwall, UK
'This is Cornwall' reports that the Salvage Hunters film crew spent a day filming at the Long Rock architectural salvage yard of Shiver Me Timbers which this year has been under threat of demolition by a property developer, like many of the UK's salvage businesses. Despite the UK government's claimed support for reuse, many small salvage yards have been forced to close in the past five years.
The business was started by Trader Gray and was taken on by his son, Joe Knowle, after Trader passed away three years ago. Early this year, Mr. Knowles said, ""The landlord is legally entitled to do what he sees fit with the property. Leaving here would be a huge wrench. We're trying to come to an amicable solution. It has been built up over the years by my dad and we are trying to keep the recycle and reuse ethos going. We want to carry on the tradition of what we've always done here."
Joe Knowle said, "Drew Pritchard bought a nice machinist's angle-poise lamp from an industrial workplace, a nice big circular fan-light window, an old Thirties medical poster and some Cold War posters. He took quite a few bits and quite a few of his crew bought stuff from me too. The sound man and the cameraman both bought something off air. It should be screened next year."
Salvage Hunters director Jon Nutter said, "Joe was absolutely lovely. Shiver Me Timbers is a such a great place to film because visually it's brilliant. It's a beautiful place and it's going to look great on TV."
Joe Knowle said he was thinking of making his own film about Shiver Me Timbers and asked if anyone had footage to get in touch with him.
Salvage Hunters is currently airing in Canada, where Trader Gray's sister now lives, and the new series is scheduled on UK Quest this winter. According to the producers Salvage Hunter is now the highest rating show in Canada.
