Kevin Ellis has applied for permission several times to rebuild the nineteenth century Burnaston Hall, which he measured, dismantled and stored to make way for a Toyota factory in 1990. Since then he has applied to re-erect it in Mickleover, Repton, and more recently he applied for permission from South Derbyshire District Council to rebuild it at Bearwardcote.
 
On Tuesday 23 November 2010 the council refused the application saying there was insufficient justification for going against countryside policy. Previous applications have been rejected because 'the building would look out of character with the surrounding rural landscape', and because 'the building had no historic attachment' to a local town. Groups which have supported previous applications include the Ancient Monument Society and the Georgian Group, while the Council for British Archaeology has recommended refusal.
 
The building measured 6,000sqft before demolition and is currently stored on between 1,500 and 3,000 pallets at a secret location. The house, originally built by an ancestor of East Staffordshire fascist leader Oswald Mosley, used to overlook Burnaston airfield. A Japanese company bought the mansion kit and had planned to rebuild it in Tokyo as a golf clubhouse, but changed its mind and Mr Ellis brought the stones back to Derbyshire.
