School furniture and equipment continue to be the focus in many design projects in restaurants, pubs and in the home. They suit industrial and rustic themed designs well. However a few well chosen pieces will complement any interior including ultra modern.
The latest trends for interiors are from consumers wanting more timeless pieces made to last with functionality and old school designs fit this perfectly. Another reason people are drawn to these school pieces is simple nostalgia. It is true that for most adults, their school years occupy a significant place in their memories.
School furniture was often simple, functional and built to last. Some of these designs have since even become iconic. One such designer was James Leonard, from the Educational Supply Association in the 1950s, who pioneered aluminium die-casting and steam bending wood. Esavian was the trading brand name for the Educational Supply Association Ltd, a leading UK supplier of school books, school furniture and fixtures including laboratory euqipment, windows and folding partitions. They stood for low-cost, good quality furniture. A desk designed by James Leonard, constructed of aluminium & African teak is currently for sale on SalvoWEB, from The Rub Antique Company. It was found in an old Cheshire school.
The wood used for this old school furniture was usually natural hardwoods like beech, oak and tropical wood like teak and iroko were all used in schools. These woods are beautiful and age well. School pieces with the marks of time and even some graffiti would make a unique additions to any interior and can look good as just they are or simply bring them back to life with a good wax or oil. Alternatively any low value pieces can be brightened up with some eco paint.
Science laboratory tops can be reused as kitchen worktops. School furniture can add charm or an industrial element and provide much needed practical storage. Items like old lockers look good in kitchens, bedrooms, hallways or boot rooms and provides lots of practical storage. Small desks with lift up lids also make good hallway tables. Accessories like old metal coat racks, gym equipment, bells, clocks, wall maps and globes give a vintage school vibe. Chalkboards are a fun practical addition to any kitchen, home office or playroom. Other salvaged school pieces such as classic vintage school pendant lighting, cast iron radiators and sinks look good reused in the home too.
