London - Royal Academy - Transitional Object, PsychoBarn by Cornelia Parker:

The components of a dismantled traditional American red barn have been used with the planks of the long sidings becoming the house walls and the corrugated roofing material used for the roof tiles. The design is based on the Bates family motel from the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock classic horror film, Psycho. The motel itself was modelled on a 1925 painting by Edward Hopper, House by the Railroad. This painting was also used by Parker as a reference for the PsychoBarn. The red barn represents good old fashioned rural wholesomeness which is in stark contrast to the spooky evil feel of the Hitchcock house.

Early American red wood barns in recent times have often fallen into disrepair or been demolished and salvaged for reuse. Reclaimed barn wood can be found for sale in many American architectural salvage yards. Barn wood is often for sale on SalvoWEB too. The strength and beauty of this old growth timber make it popular for reuse as timber framing, wall panelling, flooring, fireplace mantles and as garden or interior design features.

Transitional Object, PsychoBarn was first exhibited on the Cantor Roof Garden of the Metropolitan Museum of Art , New York City in 2016. The view of both Central Park and the Manhattan skyline made a dramatic contrast to the classic but eerie farm house. Although the thirty foot scaled down house facade made with reclaimed American barn wood also makes a strange contrast in the busy setting of central London.

Transitional Object is in The Annenberg Courtyard, Burlington House, Royal Academy of Arts, Piccadilly, London. W1J 0BD.
