London West, UK - Halloween appears to bring us Brits much delight judging by the millions of pounds spent on food, costumes, decorations and entertainment each year, but if you take a moment to consider the amount we waste it could give you a fright. The holiday usually amounts to one-wear costumes, mass-produced plastic accessories and non-recyclable sweet wrappers. I am not gunning for the role of Halloween's grinch, after all I married an American so I think it was part of my vows…to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and for Halloween. So I am all in this year. Here are some fun ideas to inspire your green Halloween.

1) Look for reclaimed props like this spooky salvage rescued from an old ghost train by Chris Charles Reclamation.

2) Treat your trick-or-treaters to organic and Fair Trade chocolate and an ornate cast iron Victorian door knocker like this example from The Architectural Forum. The big go-to manufacturers for cheap Halloween treats have a big impact on the environment with their demand for sugar, cocoa beans and palm oil.

3) Spend the evening apple bobbing surrounded by autumnal decorations you will use again and again like these early 20C wooden candle stick holders from UK Architectural Heritage.

4) Turn off the lights and enjoy beeswax or soy-based candles over a ghost story or two, whilst rocking in this antique chair by Jacobs and Josef from Warehouse 701.
