AUGUST 2008: June 2008 had the lowest apparent visitor numbers since January 2006 but this may in part have been due to server and software changes that took place in June. The Webalizer stats contrast strongly with the Google Analytics figures for July 2008 which were salvoweb.com 23,062 and salvo.co.uk 73,172 giving a total of 96,234 unique visitors, compared to 87,800 in Jun 2007 (see below). So it would appear that Webaliser shows a big year on year drop in visitors while Google Analytics shows a ten per cent increase.
JUNE 2007: On Salvo sites and allied hosted pages and sites there were 685,700 visitors (stats by Webalizer 2.01). A visit (defined by Webalizer) occurs when a remote site makes a request provided that site has not made a request in the previous 30 minutes. Only page requests will trigger a visit, so remotes sites that link to graphic and other non-page URLs will not be counted in the visit totals, reducing the number of false visits. The June 2007 monthly visitor breakdown according to Webalizer (rounded to the nearest 100) per url is: www.salvo.co.uk 304,800; www.salvoweb.com 248,400; www.salvomie.co.uk 29,000; www.theft-alerts.com 22,300; www.wantsandoffers.co.uk 20,600; www.wantsandoffers.com 18,700; www.bca-materiauxanciens.com 9,900; www.salvomie.com 9,700; www.bca-antiquematerials.com 8,800; www.salvo-fair.com 8,500; www.reclaimedbricks.net 2,100; www.whartonantiques.com 1,300; www.haes.co.uk 900; www.jd-lawrence.co.uk 400; www.barnfireplaces.co.uk 300
In January 2007 we started tracking visitors using Google Analytics on certain sites. The June stats are: www.salvo.co.uk 63,600; www.salvoweb.com 24,200; www.bca-materiauxanciens.com 6,400; www.bca-antiquematerials.com 3,500; www.whartonantiques.com 700; www.haes.co.uk 400. Discrepancies between Webalizer and Google are explained by the fact that Webalizer analyses our server log files which contains every request. Google Analytics uses the client computer and cookies to track visitors, so cookies must be enabled, javascript must be working, images must be downloaded, and it helps if the client is using Explorer or Firefox.
Salvo has two main sites and a number of smaller ones.
The Salvo UK site is www.salvo.co.uk
The Salvo International site is www.salvoweb.com
Definition of a 'Unique Visit' from Webalizer: Visits occur when some remote site makes a request for a page on your server for the first time. As long as the same site keeps making requests within a given timeout period, they will all be considered part of the same Visit. If the site makes a request to your server, and the length of time since the last request is greater than the specified timeout period (default is 30 minutes), a new Visit is started and counted, and the sequence repeats. Since only pages will trigger a visit, remotes sites that link to graphic and other non- page URLs will not be counted in the visit totals, reducing the number of false visits.
