This is a granite trough that is approx. 6ft by 2 ft and 2ft high. It makes a beautiful container for displaying plants or can be used in dramatic and bold water features. As it is solid granite it will last for ever. It has lots of character and the edges have been worn smooth by cattle drinking out of the trough. The walls and floor are very thick (about 4 inches) so therefore this item is very heavy ( approx 450kg).There is a drain hole in the base of the trough - ideal for drainage or could be blocked if suited depending on use. Ref 00603 : "Ponne" en pierre calcaire, bac rond région Charente-Poitou, La ponne dans le Poitou était une grande cuve en terre cuite ou en pierre, installée à côté d'une cheminée dans une dépendance de la maison.
Elle servait à faire, deux fois par an, la lessive que l'on appelle en patois la "bugeaille".
Les femmes lavaient le linge avec de la cendre puis le parfumaient avec des racines d'iris.. Dimensions : diamètre 110cm, hauteur 75cm, diamètre intérieur 88cm, prof 53cm.

Antique circular vat in limestone from the Charente-Poitou region of France. They were used as washing vats installed alongside a fireplace for heating the water in an outbuilding. Traditionally twice a year the ladies washed clothes using ground ashes perfumed with iris roots. Dimensions approx: Exterior diameter 110cm (43ins) x ht 75cm (30ins) x depth 53cm (21 inches). Interior diameter 88cm (35 inches).

Standing at 11' tall by 43" square this English structure would be ideal as a garden folly or as interest to a vista.

The timber frame work is of pegged construction and in an excellent condition with no rot. The lead work around the finial is sound and watertight. The copper wind-vane works perfectly.
