GAZE - DREARY DAY BUT FULL ROOM OF BIDDERS
"Iron wares and garden tools were hot sellers on the sale meadow. In the room a pine shop cupboard with painted doors took £1204 to a phone bidder from North Norfolk." said Carl Willows from TW Gaze. "There was an excellent collection of lots from a local retired gamekeeper, with nine lots in the top twenty five at the Rural and Domestic Bygones sale on the 25th September.

"A fine copper copper went at £685 to trade. Advertising materials still very popular whether enamels, tin, card or painted boxes.A Victorian tin Colman's mustard finger plate in used condition, but rare, went to a Norwich collector for £525, also taking a very early showcard for Starch at £390."

"Perhaps my favourite item, a Victorian bier in superb original condition, made a very reasonable £342. Leather shotgun cases (no contents) featured in the gamekeeper's collection, all famous makers, sold well- top lot a Holland & Holland double at £413."

"Surprise lot was a good clean moleing spade causing gasps at £252. Not a bad snip though for a 17th Century oak spice cabinet making £435. All prices include buyers premium at 12.5 percent plus vat.

Next sales: Architectural Sale 6th November and Bygones 27th November.

Westfield's charity car boot bonanza
WESTFIELD CAR BOOT FAIR
Walking through Westfield last Friday I came across the Car Boot Fair. It was a colourful event and suprisingly some cars were promoting not just clothes but charities.
Two cars particularly caught my eye as they were both promoting reuse for charity. One car boot was displaying Mary's Living and Giving shop in Notting Hill. The Save the Children charity shop with a difference is the idea of Mary Portas, 'Queen of Shops'. It encourages the local community to donate nearly new designer clothes, accessories or home ware.
Then the Donna Ida car displayed designer jeans and an armchair covered in denim. This was encouraging everyone to wear jeans for Jeans for Genes Day on 1st October to help raise money for children with genetic disorders. Old and unwanted donated jeans had also been styled and were to be sold with 50 percent of the proceeds going to the charity at Lily Allen's store, 'Lucy in Disguise'. So this was a guilt-free shopping experience and car booting in style. - SM

HARROGATE SALVAGE SHOW CANCELLED
Joan Porter from the ATG reports that, 'Arthur Swallow's previously announced new specialist fair, the two-day Restoration and Salvage Show, to be launched at the Harrogate Show-ground on September 11 and 12, has unfortunately been cancelled.

Arthur Swallow director Richard Burgoin said, "The contracts were signed, the publicity posters and advertising were out, and we had nearly half of the 100 maximum bookings, but unfortunately there were a lot of difficulties at the show-ground, many of the unforeseen. But we are very committed to holding this fair next year in the North of England, somewhere near Harrogate, as there is nothing like this in the north and we think it will be a real draw."

Richard stressed that he s not in competition with the annual Salvo Fair held at Knebworth Park and for his part Thornton Kay of Salvo takes the "more the merrier" view about another architectural salvage fair in the calendar.

Duke of Devonshire with some of the items up for sale [photo. The Financial Times]
THE DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE'S 3-DAY AUCTION AT SOTHEBY'S
The Duke of Devonshire, one of the UK's wealthiest aristocrats, is planning to auction unwanted items found in storage at Chatsworth, his stately home in Derbyshire.

Maev Kennedy of the Guardian reports that, 'for over two hundred years, the Dukes of Devonshire called a splendid, William Kent-designed London mansion home. When Devonshire House, as it was known, was razed in 1925 the family removed much of the mansion's contents, its pictures, furnishing, and many of its architectural elements, to the even more imposing, 300-room Chatsworth in Derbyshire. Since that time, much of this loot has sat in Chatsworth's vast attics, along with relics from others of their houses. This October, in a three-day sale at Chatsworth, Sotheby's will sell 20,000 of these items in 1400 lots expected to bring $3.8 million. The Duke needs the space, he explained.

The items to be auctioned at Chatsworth at the start of October include architectural salvage of the highest order: large chunks of Devonshire House, the London seat of the duke's ancestors, which was demolished in the 1920s. Star lots include a "magnificent" carved white marble chimney piece from 1735 by architect William Kent, priced at £200,000 to £300,000.

Among the sale's more unusual offerings is a huge bookcase, estimated to fetch as much as $120,000 that concealed a secret passage to a room off the nursery in which the future George IV conducted an illicit affair. The breadth of the sale is a window into the scale and opulence with which Britain's uber-rich aristocracy has lived. It's also a nod to the work of William Kent, who designed much of the ornamentation being offered. "The sale will provide a unique opportunity to acquire examples of the work of one of England's greatest architects," says Sotheby's Harry Dalmeny. It is, he added, "an opportunity that is unlikely ever to be repeated."

Retrouvius, Off the floor exhibition [photo. Retrouvius]
AN EXHIBITION TO EXPLORE AND EXPAND RE-USE PHILOSOPHY
Retrouvius have enticed new designers Fabien Cappello and Daniel Heath, to their salvage yard in Kensal Green, London, for an exhibition which will run from 21 September until 2 October, 2010. According to the Retrouvius website the aim of the exhibition is to 'explore and expand our re-use philosophy'.

The designers brief is to interpret three salvaged materials. 'From our Heathrow Derbyshire fossil stone Fabien is hoping to create a "stone throne". Inspired by the memories, the hellos and goodbyes taken by the 319 million people as they traversed the Terminal 2 concourse. Thin oak shingles are currently being rejoined and pegged to form a wall of openings. Delicate Meranti parquet from the 1950s is coming off the floor and being transformed to make extruded desks and tables.'

An 18th Century mixed wood back-staff (Davis's Quadrant) sold for £1,200
GAZE RURAL & DOMESTIC BYGONES
Held on 31 July at 10am, Roydon Road, Diss, Norfolk.

Carl Willows of Gaze Auctioneers said, "Bygones sale again attracted a huge audience, gathered from around the country and abroad. Highlights were treen, some nice early pieces including a rare 18th Century Davis's quadrant selling at £1376. Lowlights were enamel signs despite some early examples. A French cast iron and enamelled stove which had failed to sell at £250 in the last Architectural sale this time made £458. Among more traditional 'Bygones' an Edwardian copper washing machine took £252, a display of poaching equipment £230, Norfolk fen land duck gun £206 and two Quorn custard tins £126. All quickly cleared out ready for Architectural items flooding in for next sale 21st August."

VINTAGE FAIR AT GOODWOOD
If you have not yet heard, you soon will. Wayne Hemingway has nobbled a nob, Lord March, and a group of vintage worthies to put on a three day, mainly vintage fashion and music, fair at Goodwood near Chichester in October. Among the many attractions, campers and glampers will be nostalgically glad to hear that milk will be delivered to their tents by a whistling 1960s milkman.

CHATSWORTH £2.5M CLEAR OUT AUCTION IN OCTOBER
The Duke of Devonshire, a member of the Cavendish family, which has been one of the richest and most influential aristocratic families in England since the 16th century, is selling off items found in storage at Chatsworth House at a Sotheby's auction in October. Architectural salvage appears to be the main focus, with lots including many large items from Devonshire House which was the family's London house and was demolished in the 1920's. One lot is a 1735 William Kent carved white marble chimneypiece priced at £200,000 to £300,000. The sale will take place in the grounds of Chatsworth House with well over 1,000 lots at an estimated value of £2.5m.

Susan Moore of the FT writes, 'The real excitement of this sale, however, is the rediscovery of architectural salvage on a grand scale - fixtures and fittings removed from the family's various residences over the centuries. There is 15th-century Gothic tracery, presumably from Bolton Abbey, plus quantities of William and Mary fire surrounds, doors, doorcases, frames, appliqués and the like that were victims of the constant remodelling at Chatsworth.
Most spectacular of all are the pieces - including most of the library - from Devonshire House, designed by William Kent in the 1730s, a pile that stretched from Green Park to Berkeley Square. Untouched for almost a century in the dusty, atmospheric old granary in the stable block, these have proved a hidden treasure trove. Dismantled and removed before the house was demolished, each chimneypiece had been stored in pieces, practically but unhelpfully classified according to size. The heroine of this tale was Evelyn, ninth duchess, who had each constituent part labelled. Using these labels, inventories and old photographs of the interiors, Sotheby's experts have heroically pieced together a monumental jigsaw, in effect recreating the interiors of the lost house. The sale is a dream for architectural historians - and a house restorer's heaven.'

TENTH SALVO FAIR VISITOR NUMBERS
Official visitor numbers at Salvo Fair 2010 were 4,828. This amounts to 300 people less than Salvo 2009. The decrease was caused by the England football match on Sunday which meant the fair site was very quiet from around 2pm. However, there was a thirty percent increase in ticket sales on the gate on Saturday. On the Salvo stand, wooden wine boxes from The Wine Society, Stevenage were sold to raise money for Medecins Sans Frontieres. Contributions towards Saturday night's hog roast were also donated bringing the total raised to £366. Big thank you's all round.

CONVIVIAL IN CUMBRIA
Cartmel, Cumbria UK - THE gathering in Cartmel on Friday 27 November 2009, kindly organised by Clive Wilson of WRS, and hopefully the first of an annual event at the Cavendish Arms, was deemed a very pleasant occasion. It was marred only by the devastation wreaked the previous week by the floods further west at Workington and Cockermouth. Some damage was sustained at properties nearer to hand, including Cartmel itself.

Fifteen people attended the evening meal, mostly dealers, several with partners. Dan Hill of Tiger Enterprises in Brighton called in later in the evening having spent a day in the worse hit flood town Cockermouth encouraging reuse of salvageable items from flooded properties. Steve Tomlin left in the morning for a site in Glasgow owned by a prominent plc who have been keeping him busy of late, having contracted Masco to undertake a reclamation audit for each site they redevelop.

A surfeit of jollity and paucity of hard news ensued. One upcoming event that was mentioned was that 27 January is the annual Thomas Crapper day, with 2010 being the centenary year of the great plumber's death. Simon Kirby hoped to hold a graveside vigil at Elmer's End Cemetery in Beckenham, the location of which, to Simon's delight, is a few yards west of the grave of Samuel Shenton (d1971), founder of The Flat Earth Society who explained gravity by stating that the earth disc was moving upwards through space at the rate of 9.8m/sec2, and whose comment about a photo of planet Earth taken from outer space was, "It is easy to see how a photograph like that could fool the untrained eye."

The construction of a bypass two years ago around nearby Low Newton, the home of Wilson Reclamation Services, eliminated passing traffic completely, so Mr Wilson changed tack. WRS is still a vital local source of reclaimed material and architectural salvage, but also now has an upper gallery showcasing the work of local craftspeople together with a new old cafe which was thriving on the Saturday after Friday's meal. He organises events there, of which a forthcoming Christmas fair of the work of dozens of local craftspeople is one example, and does what he can to drum up publicity to help offset the lack of signage alerting bypass traffic to WRS' existence. The bypass has resulted in some other businesses, especially the erstwhile successful folk pub up the road, closing their doors permanently.
