Due to a number of factors - change in fuel from wood to oil or gas, cultural shift away from rural economy and depopulation - the forests are no longer kept in such good shape. The demand for oak thinnings is decreasing and many old timber agricultural buildings are left to rot. The timber is not even deemed suitable for burning.
In 1989 Patrick Snitselaar, with the encouragement of a local commune in Haute Marne, started to salvage old oak beams and flooring for resale to other areas of France and abroad.

Antique Beams
Most beams come from the region around Haute Marne, France, which is the most forested département of France - all oak forest - which exists due to centuries of careful forest management organised by villages or communes.
